Betancourt Museum Recalls Cuban Numismatic Tradition.

Clara Cecilia López Álvarez, director of the institution stated that it is an is honor to safeguard these pieces, which, from a heritage and documentary perspective, allow us to reconstruct the nation’s socioeconomic history.


In an effort to highlight the historical and cultural significance of Cuban numismatics, the Gustavo González Pérez Museum in this municipality has strengthened its outreach efforts to promote knowledge and appreciation of the heritage of this discipline, considered an essential tool in the analysis of the country’s economic and sociocultural development.

According to López Álvarez, the museum has a diverse collection that ranges from coins, banknotes, and worksheets to checks, decorations, medals, trophies, and other historical documents that illustrate key periods in both the local and international contexts.

López Álvarez also noted that among the most significant objects in the collection, the facility exhibits Cuban commemorative silver pieces issued during the centenary of José Martí, as well as European and Asian coins such as coins from France and Spain dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries, in addition to coins from Greece, Russia, Bulgaria, China, and Japan, which demonstrate the geographic and chronological breadth of the collection.

Likewise, the director indicated that the catalog includes a notable collection of tokens used in old sugar factories and payment documents belonging to the former «Cuba» sugar mill, as well as stamps and decorations awarded to internationalists and a series of medals and trophies linked to the outstanding Betancourt volleyball player Ernesto Martínez Hernández, donated to the site by his family and of great historical significance.

She also stated that the institution is honored to safeguard these pieces, which, from a heritage and documentary perspective, allow us to reconstruct the socioeconomic future of the nation and, in particular, facilitate new generations’ access to knowledge related to the monetary legacy and exchange processes on the island.
