The town of Juan Gualberto Gómez commemorated the 170th anniversary of the birth of the famous patriot of the province of Matanzas and the municipality of Unión de Reyes, who played a leading role in Cuba’s independence struggles.

The event was presided over by Michel Matías Ballesteros, head of the Ideological Department of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC); Arlén González Luis, first secretary of the Municipal Committee of the PCC; and Francisco Rodríguez Cruz, vice president of the Union of Journalists of Cuba, as well as other representatives of political and mass organizations and especially Mercedes Ibarra, great-granddaughter of Juan Gualberto Gómez.

 

The first secretary in this territory declared that as a Martiano, Juan Gualberto identified with the idea of building a Republic with all and for the good of all, and is a symbol and example for the people.

 

The event was part of the activities of the National Colloquium for the 170th birthday of the journalist and included the presentation of papers and research by renowned historians.

 

The exhibition Entre el Arte y la Cultura was also inaugurated in the town also known as Sabanilla and the municipal museum that bears his name was reopened in Unión de Reyes.

The latter institution has objects belonging to the patriot and poet Regino Pedroso, 19th century fans and weapons used in the wars of independence.

In addition, among its most valuable collections are the capitulars of the city councils of Cidra, Alacranes and Cabezas.

Juan Gualberto Gómez Ferrer (Sabanilla del Encomendador, July 12th, 1854-Havana, March 5th, 1933) was a Cuban politician, journalist and leader, who stood out in the struggle for Cuba’s independence.
