Matanzas institutions recognized in ceremony for International Cities Day (+photos and audios).

The National Institute of Territorial Planning and Urbanism gave a special recognition to the city of Matanzas for its work to achieve an integral territorial development from the local level.

Outstanding Matanzas institutions were recognized this Thursday in Matanzas as part of the celebrations for the International Day of Cities, a day in which the Athens of Cuba served as national headquarters.

This recognition, which was also given to important personalities from Matanzas and workers in the housing and construction sector, celebrated the efforts of these organizations and institutions in the care, conservation and development of the city of Matanzas. Among them were the Office of the Historian and the City Conservator, construction companies and producers of building materials in the territory, the Sauto Theater and the University of Matanzas.

The national event for the International Day of Cities, which was presided over by the first secretary of the provincial Party Committee, Mario Sabines Lorenzo; Major General Raúl Omar Acosta Gregorich, president of the National Institute of Territorial Planning and Urbanism, and Georgina Michelena, representative of the United Nations Human Settlements Program in Cuba, closed the National Urban October Day. This United Nations initiative, promoted by the UN-Habitat agency, was dedicated this year to involve young people to achieve a better urban future.
