On the 52nd anniversary of the beginning of Higher Education in the province, the University of Matanzas distinguished the president of the National Assembly of People’s Power, Juan Esteban Lazo Hernández, with the honorary recognition of Doctor Honoris Causa in Social Sciences.

On the commemorative day, in a solemn ceremony presided over by the Minister of Higher Education, Doctor in Technical Sciences Walter Baluja García; the vice minister Doctor Alicia Alonso Becerra and the rector of the University of Matanzas Doctor Leyda Finalé de la Cruz, the distinction was awarded.

At the ceremony, Finalé de la Cruz explained Lazo’s trajectory from his humble birth in the village of La Isabel, in the municipality of Jovellanos, to his political growth and his support for the construction of socialism.

«Among the causes of honor that today justify that Esteban Lazo be granted this status stands out his contribution to the political and social life of our country, proving the historical legitimacy and demonstration of his commitments to the Revolution and the people.»

The Cuban leader, who holds a degree in Economics and a PhD in Educational Sciences, donated one of his notebooks to the institution and thanked the Revolution for his education at the University.
He also related anecdotes of what preceded the inauguration of the University of Matanzas on May 9th, 1972 and how it has trained professionals since that time.

Juan Esteban Lazo Hernández, at 80 years old, is the fourth person to receive the Doctor Honoris Causa distinction from the University of Matanzas, joining the list that includes Carilda Oliver Labra, Ronaldo Veitía and Justo Chávez.

The highest distinction is awarded to eminent people who have excelled in various professional, social and cultural fields, who do not necessarily have an academic career.

The integral formation of professionals in all branches for the development of science and technological innovation, university extension and the advancement of computerization are some of the objectives of Higher Education in the province, which is celebrating its 52nd anniversary.
