A call to preserve our mother tongue (+audio).

On February 21st, UNESCO is dedicating its annual celebration of International Mother Language Day to promoting linguistic and cultural diversity around the world in a context where it is urgent to preserve and protect languages and dialects.

Precisely, in such a globalized society, it is pertinent for those of us who make up the more than 400 million Spanish speakers in the world to safeguard the Spanish language, not only because it represents a bridge to cultural exchange, but also because of the expressive richness and communicative vastness with which its study and practice reward us.

In this regard, we talked to Elaine Cruz García, professor of Spanish-Literature at the «Leonor Pérez Cabrera» Polytechnic School in the municipality of Pedro Betancourt, who told our radio station about the potential of the Spanish language and the need to extol its legacy.

Likewise, it should be noted that the protection of Spanish requires constant efforts to guarantee its correct use and timely transmission to future generations, for which its teaching in educational centers and promotion through the media, as well as knowledge and respect for linguistic varieties and dialects are extremely important tasks.

The International Mother Language Day then becomes an incentive to safeguard our linguistic and cultural heterogeneity, because the word, as a warm embrace, transcends borders and connects us, exalts us and makes us brothers and sisters.
