International Human Rights Day: The Enduring Relevance of a Historic Achievement.

International Human Rights Day is, ultimately, a universal call to action. It invites us to honor the memory of those who fought for equality and justice, and to commit to continuing that work.

Seventy-seven years ago, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ushered in a new era in contemporary history. Since then, every December 10th has been celebrated as International Human Rights Day, a day that reminds us that dignity, freedom, and justice are not distant aspirations, but essential foundations of everyday life.

In 2025, the commemoration is framed by the theme “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials,” an expression that underscores how these guarantees are not limited to protecting against violence or discrimination.

They represent the basis of hope, security, and the possibility of building life projects. They are the invisible pillars that sustain routines, workplaces, and human relationships.

This anniversary takes place within a global context marked by political turmoil, growing inequalities, and feelings of insecurity.

Amid these tensions, human rights emerge as the common ground that unites people beyond differences of race, gender, creed, or identity.
The right to security, freedom of expression, decent work, and fair treatment becomes the foundation upon which social life is built, even when economic or climate crises threaten to destabilize it.

However, these achievements continue to be violated in many parts of the world. Violence, exploitation, and systemic inequalities disproportionately affect women, racialized communities, Indigenous peoples, migrants, and various groups historically marginalized due to their identity, sexual orientation, or social or cultural status.

Defending human rights demands collective action that transcends borders and involves governments, institutions, and social organizations.

In Cuba, as in other countries, the protection of fundamental rights is reflected in constitutional frameworks and legal instruments such as the Family Code, which seek to realize social justice and full dignity.

However, the true impact of human rights is measured in everyday life: when a worker organizes their union without fear, when a family receives a fair wage, when a marginalized voice finds a space to be heard.

International Human Rights Day is, ultimately, a universal call to action. It invites us to honor the memory of those who fought for equality and justice, and to commit to continuing their work.

Human rights are not distant ideals: they are achievable realities, built with solidarity, education, and collective action. Only in this way will it be possible to build a more just, united, and peaceful world, where human dignity is affirmed as an essential part of daily life.
