Matanzas reservoirs remain at 54 percent of capacity.

The eight active reservoirs in Matanzas province today accumulate 99.271 million cubic meters of water, which represents 54 percent of the total capacity, and a constant vigilance is maintained in view of the current hurricane season.

Javier Romero Perera, technical director of the Hydraulic Resources delegation in Matanzas, told the Cuban News Agency that these water reservoirs are currently capable of storing up to 300 millimeters (mm) of rainfall, and that the necessary measures are foreseen in case this volume is exceeded.

He assured that a permanent monitoring of the 51 possible flooding areas in the territory is maintained and that, in addition, work was carried out in the cleaning of 15 kilometers of canals in the municipalities of Cardenas, Colon and those located to the south near the towns of Pedroso and Socorro.

The province recorded 139.5 millimeters of rainfall at the end of May, with greater incidence in the municipalities of Calimete, Jagüey Grande and Ciénaga de Zapata, a figure that is in line with the historical average for the same period, Romero Perera explained.

The reservoirs are in conditions to store large volumes of rain, from the Water Subgroup in each territory the probable risks are evaluated and alternatives are guaranteed to face the present stage, he added.

The Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology issued today an early warning alert related to the formation of a deep trough over the Gulf of Mexico and western Cuba, which will maintain a high probability of clouds and rainfall throughout the national territory.
