Under the slogan «Summer Always Young,» the municipality of Pedro Betancourt welcomed the official start of the summer season with enthusiasm, joy, and a multitude of recreational activities. These events were marked by cultural diversity, community participation, and a tribute to local roots, in the context of the upcoming bicentennial of the founding of the territory.
The activities, which also extended to all the Popular Councils, included a varied program consisting of visual arts exhibitions, book sales, traditional games, and musical and dance performances.
The Jaime López Secada Voluntary Sports Council in the municipal seat hosted a highly anticipated «Sol préndete Gigante» (Giant Sun, Turn On the Giant) event that combined karaoke, dance competitions, and participatory games. The Estrellitas del Futuro children’s choir’s musical performances captivated residents in Pepe Roque Park, and the D Clave orchestra brought rhythm and flavor to the evening festivities in 28 de Septiembre Square.
And in an effort to bring the arts closer to diverse audiences and foster intergenerational dialogue around Cuba’s visual heritage, the Enrique Pérez Triana Art Gallery led a discussion on the professional career of artist Eduardo Abela, held at the community dining hall of the town’s Family Care System.
Magician Omar Fuentes arrived in Manuelito to surprise the audience with an interactive show as part of the Cultural Day, and rural traditions took center stage with a guateque (a traditional guajira music) and improvised verses celebrating the rural identity of the district. An agricultural fair also took place, serving as a space for community exchange and a source of access to food products for the population.
On the other hand, the Municipal Sports Department led martial arts exhibitions, «Let’s Play» competitions, and dance therapy sessions in Bolondrón, which also served as the setting for colorful chalk drawings on asphalt by students from the «Frank País García» junior high school.
Likewise, the attractive proposals of the «La Mariposa» project by the Félix Varela Morales educational institution and the presentation of a workshop to optimize sleep in the elderly, held at the local Grandparents’ Home, stood out in the aforementioned district.
Summer 2025 thus kicks off with a clear commitment to art, memory, and citizen participation as pillars of collective enjoyment, through initiatives promoted by local cultural, educational, and sports institutions that reaffirm Pedro Betancourt’s commitment to healthy, inclusive recreation with a sense of belonging.
