Since its founding as a population settlement, the Beach City, located in the Hicacos Peninsula, Cuba’s largest sun and beach destination, celebrates its 137th anniversary on December 5th.
«137 years of history written in the sand of Varadero. A legacy of beauty, tradition and Cuban hospitality. Happy anniversary to this paradise. An unforgettable destination that continues to create magical moments,» posted on her social network account X, Nastia Valdes, delegate of the Ministry of Tourism in the province of Matanzas.
The tourist destination, one of the most important in the Caribbean, has more than 23 thousand inhabitants in a territory of 14.4 square kilometers, with a length of approximately 22 km of beach and an average width of 22 meters of sand, which makes it the main destination of the island.
The oldest of those that provide services today is the Kawama Hotel, which was founded in 1931 and belonged to Eugenio Silva, former colonel of the Liberator Army, who had the initiative to start this club with nine rustic cabins, with stonework and yagua roofs, according to researcher Teresa Iglesias.
Iglesias has referred to the incipient development of what would become tourism for this site, which began with two kiosks, which became attractions of the time, because people began to visit them seduced by the natural beauties of Varadero.
