Tarea Vida, a successful project in Matanzas.

The projects and programs of good practices for the efficient use of water and the conservation of water resources in the Matanzas territory are part of the actions included in the Tarea Vida, a plan conceived by the Cuban government to face climate change.

Water Resources specialists in the province say that the main areas to carry out these actions are Cárdenas, from the Boca de Camarioca Popular Council to Ciudad Bandera itself, the northern municipality of Martí and the Ciénaga de Zapata territory, in the south of Matanzas.

Among the actions carried out to face the consequences of climate change is the installation of five wastewater treatment plants in part of the hotel network of the Varadero beach resort, which allows reusing the sewage water from these centers for the irrigation of green areas.

Also the execution, since 2014, of a new aqueduct and a sewage system in the city of Cárdenas that will benefit more than 30 thousand inhabitants, thanks to the support of international cooperation.

The commissioning of two water desalination plants in the towns of Playa Girón and Cayo Ramona in the municipality of Ciénaga de Zapata will enable around 5,000 inhabitants to have access to an efficient and safe supply of this vital liquid.

In this same territory, a dam was built in the Soplillar Canal, which allows the drainage of rainwater towards the Laguna del Tesoro, thus avoiding floods in the southern part of the province.

Work is also being done to reduce losses and efficient use of water through new investments in the province, such as the water supply system of Cuevas de Bellamar, the maintenance of the aqueduct in the community of Manuelito and others in the municipality of Unión de Reyes.

Water is the most important resource for the existence of living beings on planet earth and is present in all social, economic and environmental activities developed by mankind for the benefit of humanity.

For this reason, Tarea Vida, the Cuban State’s plan to confront climate change, promotes a culture aimed at saving water and strengthening systems in the water sector in the province of Matanzas.
