The Children’s Day Care Center «Amiguitos de la Paz», in the municipality of Matanzas, stands out for its role in the food sovereignty program promoted by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Cuba with the planting of vegetables and short-cycle vegetables that contribute to the nutrition of the little ones.

A total of 172 boys and girls who make up the enrollment not only benefit from the variety of food, their education is also strengthened with the actions for food and nutritional education, with an agro-ecological approach, highlighted Yaquelín González Pérez, director of the center.

«The support of the family has been fundamental because between the teachers and the parents they have planted the flower beds and in a few months the results have been seen.

«The circle has also made alliances with the urban farm and other entities, and fertilizers, seeds and worm humus have arrived through them.

Likewise, planting introduces children to topics such as soil management, permaculture, agroecology and broadens their knowledge about the consumption of vegetables and their benefits for human health.

Since 2021 the Ministry of Education issued the Resolution that advocates the best alternatives for the production of short-cycle food, and integrate children in these processes.

These actions respond to the Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security Law that reinforce the nation’s capacity to produce food in a sustainable way and give access to the entire population to sufficient, diverse, balanced, nutritious, safe and healthy food, reducing dependence on external means and inputs with respect for cultural diversity and environmental responsibility.

In addition, food sovereignty and the strengthening of food and nutritional security are objectives to be achieved in Cuba as part of the 2030 Agenda in order to progressively guarantee the protection of the right to healthy and adequate food for people.

In Cuba, food and nutritional security is one of the priorities in the updating of the economic and social development model.

This was made clear in Article 77 of the Constitution of the Republic of Cuba, which states that all people have the right to healthy and adequate food, to consume quality goods and services that are not detrimental to their health, to access accurate and truthful information about them and to receive fair and dignified treatment, according to the law and, consequently, the State creates the conditions to strengthen food security for the entire population.
