Eliecer Lazo literary award ceremony begins in Matanzas
Every year in Matanzas, the Eliecer Lazo Contest, sponsored by the Saíz Brothers Association (AHS), is awarded to stimulate and reward the creation and young talent in literature.
The 2023 edition is announced with a program of excellence, which includes, among other activities, panels, talks, book presentations and concerts.
The inauguration will take place this Friday, November 24th, at 9:00 a.m., at the Gener y Del Monte Library. From 2:00 in the afternoon, at the Patio Colonial, headquarters of the AHS in the province, a meeting between two generations will make it possible to appreciate the poetic excellence in Matanzas with a reading of texts by members of the Association and the UNEAC.
Authors such as Náthaly Hernández Chávez, Patricia Mesa, Pablo G. Lleonart and Luis Enrique Mirambert, Maylan Álvarez, Luis Lexander Pita, Derbys Domínguez and Alfredo Zaldívar will be present. The moment will be propitious for the presentation of several books of poetry.
The evening also invites the enjoyment of good young art, with a special peña of Los Grafómanos, a space that has been essential for the formation of young writers and in general for the promotion of literature and culture among the new generations of creators from Matanzas, and the presentation of Dúo Fábula, at the Patio Colonial.
Saturday Book Saturday, at the Parque de la Rueda Dentada, will also be dedicated to young people, with the presentation of La hora violeta, by Náthaly Hernández Chávez and readings by some of our associates.
At 3:00 in the afternoon, the awards ceremony will take place in the Pepe Camejo hall, headquarters of Teatro de Las Estaciones, to give way to the presentation of the plaquettes with the winners of the Eliecer Lazo in 2022: Carne, poem by Héctor Rivero and Entre dos viejos pánicos, by Erián Peña Pupo.
In situ, the concert Para despertar (To awaken) will take place, with troubadour Sergio Mora and journalist, art critic and professor Joaquín Borges Triana, winner of the José Antonio Fernández de Castro Cultural Journalism Award. The day will close in style with a concert by William Vivanco at the headquarters of the Hermanos Saiz Association in Matanzas.
The first Eliecer Lazo contest was held in 1997. In its beginnings it only awarded prizes in the Poetry section, but due to the proliferation of storytellers and journalists interested in the contest, the call was extended to the categories of Short Story and Chronicle.
Promoting and giving opportunities and spaces to the youngest Cuban writers are some of the fundamental objectives of the contest organized by the AHS in the Matanzas territory; it also seeks to consolidate the consumption of good young literature at a time when time sometimes seems short to enjoy the pleasure of reading.
