Representatives of several hotel collectives, travel agencies, private sector and trade union movement cadres make up the Matanzas delegation of the tourism sector to the final sessions of the 22nd Congress of the Cuban Workers’ Central Union (CTC), to be held in April 2025.
At the Villa Cuba Hotel, of the Gran Caribe chain, the voting of the eight elected people took place, from a pool of 26 candidates and more than 500 pre-candidates, all as a result of their results in the performance of their missions.
The number of delegates is assigned by the CTC in the country and responds to an inclusive composition, in addition to representatives of CTC cadres, explained Julio Enrique Morales Verea, general secretary of the National Union of Hotel and Tourism Workers (SNTHT). «Where there are so many good people, it is complicated to decide,» he acknowledged.
For the happiness of affiliates and state and private workers, their disagreements, demands or best experiences will be very well supported. Not only will they have the best defenders in the 22nd Congress of the CTC, but also in the conclusive phase of that other congress which will be the National Conference of the SNTHT, on January 17th and 18th, 2025.
What is really important is to be very well prepared for both moments, Morales pointed out. It is necessary to know well, he reflected, details of issues detrimental to the labor population, ranging from wage incentives, through destinations of profits such as the repair, acquisition and construction of housing or the creation of Economic Stimulation Fund for mixed hotels under Law 118 of Foreign Investment, which today does not benefit the Royalton Hicacos hotel in Varadero.
He also mentioned incident problems in the quality of the provision of services such as irregularities with workers’ transportation, and the lack of assurance of inputs, raw materials or products, all variables that must be resolved in that urgency to meet indicators such as tourist days, export of services and total income.
One aspect not to lose sight of, he warned, is the urgent need to retain the labor force, depleted by fluctuation, which is very harmful for a Cuban destination where its workers are highly valued for their professional skills and affable character.
In view of this, he suggested, it is necessary to guarantee an integral and qualitative attention. The Matanzas delegation is made up of Joel Baez, representative of the foreign currency housing tenants; Alejandro Cachaldora, secretary general of the Cubatur Travel Agency’s union bureau; Taimy Martinez, from the Secretariat of the CTC’s Provincial Committee; Elizabeth Miranda, secretary of the SNTHT’s municipal bureau in Cardenas; Yamili Rodríguez, president of the Provincial Bureau of the National Association of Innovators and Rationalizers; Yordanka Rodríguez, secretary general of the CTC Municipal Committee in Cárdenas; and Osmar Ramírez Ramírez, secretary general of the CTC Provincial Committee.
Considered the Man Congress, Arnaldo Díaz Hiedra, secretary general of the trade union bureau of the Sol Palmeras Hotel, is also part of the delegation, and will attend for the seventh time a meeting of this magnitude, the last three times consecutively. The delegation also includes Amaurys Echevarría Ruíz, delegate number nine, previously elected directly, in recognition of the successful economic, social and trade union performance of the Royalton Hicacos Hotel, where he serves as secretary general of the bureau of the workers’ organization.
