«… analyzing the 44 weeks we have been monitoring, in weeks 42-43 febrile cases have decreased by almost 50 percent, 2,700 fewer cases. This means that the actions taken, although few, have reduced the outbreaks and the number of febrile cases.»

The province of Matanzas continues its fight against arboviruses, with dengue and chikungunya as the main circulating diseases, although a significant reduction in reported febrile cases has been observed in recent weeks.

This was reported by Dr. Amancio Martínez Morejón, a specialist in Hygiene and Epidemiology, who updated the population on the health situation in the territory.

Dr. Martínez acknowledged that «there are few actions that can be taken, or have been taken, to try to reduce the breeding grounds of Aedes aegypti,» the vector that transmits these diseases. However, he highlighted an encouraging development: «Analyzing the 44 weeks we have been dealing with this, in weeks 42 and 43, febrile cases have decreased by almost 50 percent, 2,700 fewer cases. This means that the actions taken, although limited, have reduced both the breeding grounds and the number of febrile cases.»

Despite this improvement, the specialist confirmed that dengue and chikungunya cases continue to be reported in the three municipalities. In response to public complaints about the lack of fumigation in some areas, Dr. Martínez indicated that efforts are underway to normalize the service.

One of the points addressed was the care of those suffering from the aftereffects of chikungunya, known for its osteoarticular manifestations. The epidemiologist explained that «people can experience symptoms for three to six months, and even up to a year.»

The specialist also addressed the situation regarding Acute Diarrheal Diseases, with only 162 cases reported, a figure lower than the 260 registered in previous weeks. However, he urged continued vigilance in municipalities such as Limonar, Unión de Reyes, and Ciénaga de Zapata, besides emphasized practices such as breastfeeding, consumption of safe foods, and water treatment.
