Barça come close to a feat and are one goal away from the final.
FC Barcelona came within a whisker of a historic comeback in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals. After suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat in the first leg in Madrid against Atlético de Madrid, the Blaugrana returned to their stadium determined to turn the tide. They won 3-0, but the aggregate score wasn’t enough to advance to the final.

From the first minute, Hansi Flick’s team took complete control of the ball and pinned Atlético Madrid back in their own area. The plan was clear: intensity, width down the flanks, and constant pressure. The absence of a true number nine like Robert Lewandowski was noticeable, with several crosses failing to find a finisher.
The standout player was Lamine Yamal. The young winger frequently got past defenders, broke lines, and spearheaded the attack. Half an hour into the game, he delivered a precise assist that Marc Bernal converted for the opening goal, bursting into the box with the determination of a striker.
Before halftime, a penalty awarded for a foul on Pedri amplified the team’s hopes. Raphinha, captain and regular penalty taker, converted to make it 2-0 in stoppage time. The stadium roared, and the dressing room grew in confidence.
In the second half came the blow that shook the tie. Another goal from Marc Bernal made it 3-0, leaving Barcelona just one goal away from leveling the aggregate score. A comeback was no longer a pipe dream, but a real possibility.
Atlético Madrid, true to Diego Simeone’s game plan, held firm with a low, organized defensive block. Their priority was to protect the advantage gained in the first leg. Argentine goalkeeper Juan Musso was a standout in this defensive effort, making several crucial saves to prevent Barcelona from scoring a fourth goal.
Barcelona’s late push wasn’t enough. They lacked precision in the final touch and composure in the box. The 3-0 scoreline wasn’t enough, and the 4-3 aggregate score sealed their elimination.
Beyond their effort, the outcome once again highlights the defensive errors that condemned the team in the first leg. Barça showed character and resilience, but paid dearly for a first night in Madrid that ultimately proved decisive. The Copa del Rey final will be played without the Blaugrana.
