Solar Irrigation System Installed in Jovellanos

JOVELLANOS – In more than 20 agricultural entities in this municipality, the change from traditional irrigation systems to new ones powered by solar energy is taking place as part of the energy matrix change in the province.

Renewable energy is being promoted in the Lenin Enterprise and the La Alcancía Basic Cooperative Production Unit, both visited by President Miguel Díaz-Canel during a tour of the territory.

The latter shows results with the installation, joined by other successful experiences on the El Mamey farm and the one located in the La Isabel community, known as La Esperanza.

These operate with semi-stationary sprinkler irrigation systems powered by photovoltaic panels.

Also in the Julio Antonio Mella Credit and Services Cooperative, they are promoting this technology in vegetable production, while the Laborit farm, owned by producer Dayán Lantigua Llanes, is in the process of installation for crop benefit.

One of the important actors in this energy matrix transformation is the «Ella También Produce» (She Also Produces) project, which, supported by CARE Canada, backs the initiative of the territory and the province by facilitating the installation of these new systems on 20 associated farms, with 15 of them already operational.

The implementation of these mechanisms is key to food sovereignty and sustainable development, reducing energy costs and supporting female leadership in the municipality’s agricultural production.

These experiences are expected to extend to more cooperatives in the territory.
