The Vladimir Ilich Lenin Agricultural Enterprise, located in Jovellanos municipality, is focusing on extra-dense plantains and genetically modified corn as cornerstones of its production strategy to achieve food sovereignty in Matanzas province.
The enterprise reports planting 410 hectares (ha) of genetically modified corn this year and projects reaching approximately 800 ha in the upcoming spring planting season.
This production strategy combines high-yield crops with traditional plantings to meet local and provincial demand.

Foreign investment from the Mexican company Viyuacan supports the corn project, but management emphasizes that the leading role belongs to Lenin itself.
In the current cycle, the enterprise planned for 60 ha of extra-dense plantains and successfully planted 72, while maintaining 40 hectares of traditional plantains.
For the upcoming seasons, increased cultivation of extra-dense plantains, traditional plantains, corn, beans, and cassava is planned.
These figures reflect an expansion plan aimed at increasing supply and stabilizing prices in the region.
Marketing efforts are focused on ensuring supply in Jovellanos and throughout the province: products are destined for the Jovellanos hospital, the Celeste Children’s Center, senior citizens’ centers, the state collection center, the La Unión Market, and farmers’ markets in Matanzas.
With its contributions, agriculture becomes a key player in local food security and a significant supplier for provincial trade networks.
The economic impact translates into rural employment, increased activity in the agricultural collection system, and a boost to farmers’ markets and fairs.
The director of Lenin, Yury Enrique Rivera Isola, assured that “they are consolidating 410 hectares of transgenic corn this year and are working to reach around 800 hectares by next spring; at the same time, they are reinforcing the plantings of plantain, beans, and cassava to guarantee supply to local institutions and fairs.”
The combination of prioritizing high-yield crops and maintaining productive diversity positions Lenin as an economic pillar in Jovellanos and a player with growing influence in the province.
The planned planting schedule and marketing channels aim to consolidate regular supplies and boost agricultural activity in the upcoming season.
