Pedro Betancourt Celebrates its Bicentennial with Award-Winning Historical Research.

The colloquium has become a firmly established academic and research event that will continue to be held annually as part of Culture Week, with the aim of strengthening the preservation of historical memory.

As part of the bicentennial celebrations of the founding of Pedro Betancourt municipality, the Cuba Theater hosted a lively colloquium that brought together historians, researchers, institutional representatives, and local political and governmental authorities.

Sponsored by the Gustavo González Pérez Museum, in conjunction with the María Villar Buceta House of Culture, the jury was composed of specialists Julián Rogelio Álvarez López, Arenaida Lefonst Sardiñas, and Demetrio Elizalde Sotomayor, who highlighted the quality and significance of the presentations given for safeguarding historical heritage.

The awards given to the participants recognized their work on the sporting history of the Rubén Aldama Stadium; The settlements of the Macorix natives south of the Athens of Cuba and the patriotic courage of the mambí Fabián Sotomayor Cárdenas, as well as the origins of the Betancourense anthem, the remarkable work of the Family Doctors and the deeply rooted practice of repentismo in the town.

Also receiving honorable mentions were the studies focused on the urbanized area of ​​Pedro Betancourt and the journalistic work of the magazine Lirio del Valle, a pioneer of its kind in the area, as well as the life stories of baseball enthusiast Héctor Mederos Argüelles and the multi-award-winning visual artist Noelia Llanio Santana.

Enlivened by the songs of soloist Rosa María González Díaz, accompanied on guitar by instructor Jorge Alberto Hernández Torriente, the colloquium solidified its position as an academic and research event that, according to the jury members, will continue to be held annually as part of Culture Week, with the aim of strengthening the preservation of historical memory and transforming these works into reference materials for future generations.
