That was a glorious day. The shortages, the malaise and the uncertainty of the special period afflicted the Island, but not even the tense revolt that witnessed the Havana Malecon that August 5th, 1994, would serve to shatter Cuba’s faith in its Revolution.
Driven by imperialist propaganda in its eagerness to violate the tranquility and security of citizens, crime took the kidnapping of boats and vandalism as its main anti-Cuban tools.
But the simple arrival of Fidel and his peaceful but resounding intervention were enough to calm the disorder. The negative mob turned into a tide of revolutionary support and that historic day was immortalized as the Day of Fidelity to the homeland.
And faithful are all the sons who, proud and firm, defend it without hesitation. One of them is Sergio Mesa Fundora, a combatant of the Rebel Army from the municipality of Pedro Betancourt in Matanzas and a prime example of loyalty to Cuba and its Revolution.
