An official delegation from St. Petersburg paid a visit today to the province of Matanzas, reaffirming the mutual interest in strengthening ties between this western territory of Cuba and the important Russian city, within the context of the historical relations between the two countries.

During the meeting, the governor of Matanzas presented the visitors with an update on the territory’s economic and social development, the progress of government programs, and the impact of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States. She also explained the status of solar park programs and the role of Matanzas’s main industries in the local and national economy.

Governor Alexander Beglov presented the deed of ownership for a fully equipped ambulance destined for hospital services in Matanzas, a significant contribution to strengthening healthcare in the province.

Beglov expressed his gratitude for the hospitality received and highlighted the spirit of collaboration between the two territories.
“We are especially grateful for creating the conditions for our artists to participate in the concert, the gala that will be held at the Sauto Theater. I am convinced that it will bring joy to the people of Matanzas. I invite you to join me at that concert to hear some of the pieces that will be performed there,” he stated.

The governor recalled their previous meeting in Matanzas in 2024, where the initial ideas for joint work were outlined, and emphasized that one of the concrete results of that exchange is the signing, this Thursday, of a cooperation agreement between the municipality of Cárdenas and Vasilievsky Island, an emblematic territory of St. Petersburg.

He explained that Vasilievski Island, located on a small island connected by movable bridges, has a large industrial port and features that —he said— they will be able to show the Cuban delegation when they visit St. Petersburg.

Beglov also highlighted his city’s progress in information and communication technologies, including urban access control and toll systems, and celebrated the resumption of direct flights to Cuba on November 1st, which has facilitated the arrival of hundreds of Russian tourists and the establishment of new business ties.

He also recalled that last summer St. Petersburg invited Cuban pre-university students to participate in the «candlelight» festival, as a demonstration of the strengthening of cultural ties.

Governor Beglov’s visit is part of a broad work program that includes official and cultural activities in several Cuban provinces.
As part of this agenda, the St. Petersburg government will offer two concerts: one in Matanzas on November 21st at the Sauto Theater, and another in Havana on November 23rd.

The delegation was received by Marieta Poey Zamora, governor of Matanzas, and was headed by His Excellency Mr. Alexander Dmitrievich Beglov, governor of St. Petersburg.

Also part of the delegation were His Excellency Mr. Evgeny Dmitrievich Grigoriev, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of St. Petersburg; Ms. Olga Vladimirovna Androsova, Vice-Chairwoman of that Committee; and Mr. Igor Aleksandrovich Nikonov, First Vice-Chairman of the Informatization and Communications Committee.
