Caricaturist, painter and ceramist Manuel Hernández Valdés deserved the National Plastic Arts Award 2024, as announced on Friday.

The jury, chaired by intellectual and writer Miguel Barnet and made up of visual artist Lesvia Vent Dumois, vice president of Uneac; artist Zaida del Rio, National Plastic Arts Award 2023; specialist Margarita Ruiz and visual artist and director of the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts, Julio Cesar Perez Moracen unanimously decided to grant the recognition for the significant, intense and constant career of the Matanzas-born artist, who has already won the José Marti National Journalism Award and the Humor Award.

The award is specified in the minutes «for an integral and paradigmatic work, because he has artistically interpreted the imaginary of the Cuban peasantry in his sculptures, ceramics and caricatures, and because throughout his life he has obtained relevant awards in Cuba and abroad. His sense of Cuban humor is a model of the most significant and profound vision of the world of the arts. Add to this, his extensive work as a journalistic collaborator in the most important publications of our country.

The award ceremony will take place on Friday, March 14th. Journalist Jessica Mesa Duarte interviewed Hernández Valdés about this gift, which, she said, is also for all Matanzas residents, while thanking those who had a hand in this joy.
