Matanzas Rescues Its Consular History.

The research not only organizes existing information but also guides future scholars. Each reference indicates the file and location where the documents are kept, along with a summary of their content.

In an era dominated by instant information, the specialists at the Matanzas Provincial Historical Archive reaffirm their commitment to preserving the city’s documentary record and are opening new avenues for research.

Their latest contribution is a comprehensive bibliography on the consulates that existed in the city since 1812, a topic that has been little explored and is now rigorously documented.

The work carried out by the Office of the City Historian of Matanzas, through its Sub-Directorate of International Cooperation, compiles data on the consular missions based in the city, their offices, and the representatives who worked at the port and frequently sailed on the Aurora del Yumurí.

The research did not begin with established references; there were no previous articles or studies to serve as a foundation. It was necessary to search for information in archives, documentary networks, and, above all, in the holdings of the Provincial Historical Archive itself.

Although they did not find the Guide for Foreigners to the Ever-Faithful Island of Cuba, the sources consulted included the guide to the exhibition held at the Junco Palace in 1881, the book Cuban Culture by Alfredo Dolleros, and the 1940 Diplomatic and Consular Yearbook. From these materials, a list of consular missions was compiled, including the country of representation, location, and precise documentary references for further consultation.

The research not only organizes existing information but also guides future scholars. Each reference indicates the file and location where the documents are kept, along with a summary of their content. The purpose is clear: to allow researchers to begin their work on a solid foundation and continue expanding an essential chapter of Matanzas’ history.

Annia Méndez Rodríguez, a specialist in International Cooperation and currently affiliated with the Juan Milton Zooarchaeology and Paleontology Laboratory at the Office of the City Historian, emphasizes that this effort seeks to strengthen exchange ties between institutions.
