Papaya: A Sweet Collective Effort at the Arturo Suárez Agricultural Production Cooperative (audio).

The harvested fruit is destined for collection at health centers, schools, and other social institutions, guaranteeing access to fresh and nutritious food in the area.

At the Arturo Suárez Agricultural Production Cooperative (CPA) in Jovellanos municipality, papaya cultivation stands out as a key component of the local economy and community consumption. The cooperative has eight member producers who participate in the cultivation of this tropical fruit, known for its sweet flavor, high water content, and digestive properties.

The papaya, also called papaya, belongs to the species Carica papaya L. and is characterized by its rapid growth, year-round fruit production, and nutritional value. Rich in vitamin C, provitamin A, and enzymes such as papain, it is ideal for eating fresh, in juices, jams, and as an ingredient in traditional dishes.

Among the producers, Javier Rivero Barranco stands out. He has four years of experience in papaya cultivation, and his testimony reflects the commitment and perseverance required, especially under conditions of scarce agricultural inputs that limit yield per plant.

Despite the difficulties, these producers contribute significantly to the Cooperative’s economic activity. The harvested fruit is distributed to health centers, schools, and other social institutions, guaranteeing access to fresh and nutritious food in the region.

The papaya not only represents a source of income for the farmers but also a symbol of collective effort and resilience. In times of hardship, its cultivation reaffirms the importance of strengthening local production and valuing the fruits of shared labor.
