The Mario Muñoz military hospital celebrates its 67th anniversary today.

With 67 years of dedication to the people, the workers of the «Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy» Military Teaching Clinical Surgical Hospital in Matanzas commemorated another anniversary of its founding on January 7th, a date that also marks Fidel Castro’s entry into the city in 1959.

The celebration highlighted the hospital’s status as a Collective of Labor Achievement, awarded for its exceptional performance during the most challenging moments of the COVID-19 pandemic, when its staff faced the challenges of care and life with discipline and dedication.

The commemorative event recognized the human and professional value of the doctors, nurses, technicians, and support staff, heirs to a history that began in January 1959, when the nascent Rebel Army took over the management of the former Military Clinic of the No. 4 Plácido Regiment.

Shortly afterward, the institution was renamed after Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy, a native of Matanzas, who participated in the attack on the Moncada Barracks and was a martyr of the Revolution.

Today, the hospital has 180 beds and a well-established faculty that supports the training of specialists in various clinical and surgical fields.

In recent years, its infrastructure has been modernized with the installation of a new industrial gas plant, as well as improvements to wards and laboratories, which strengthen the technical support provided to healthcare services.
