Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba Committed to Childhood
The Matanzas branch of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba has accompanied its steps hand in hand with artists who, together with this emblematic institution, have built an important cultural legacy.
Cecilia Soto Martínez and Yoleydis Hernández Jiménez, both established writers in the territory, collaborate with the association and currently participate in the workshops for children it hosts.
The first confesses that although these spaces are maintained with new guests, those who started alongside president José Manuel Espino continued the journey.
«I come from that first stage with already recognized authors like Yanira Marimón, Daneris Fernández, and Julio Blanco, and we all agree that we still have much to learn from the little ones.»
For Soto Martínez, participating in these activities, especially in the Peña del Maíz Regado (Watered Corn Gathering), constitutes an enriching experience that they as writers are grateful for. In this way, she expresses that writing for children and having the opportunity to learn the inspirations behind the works is something extremely valuable.
As for Yoleydis Hernández’s assessment of her work as a member of the authors’ workshop, she highlights the importance of nourishing the intellect of the little ones.
With an outstanding career at the Manuel Navarro Luna House of Culture in the municipality of Jovellanos, the children’s narrator actively integrates the panel of professionals in each fair day.
Like her colleague, the Jovellanos artist highlights the dynamic of this project in fostering interaction between children and authors through songs and reading.
At the recent Book Fair in the province, the writers were awarded prizes in the flash fiction and décima categories for their ease in bringing these genres closer to each of those present.
Such cultural proposals, booming in peak seasons, provide the ideal environment by combining learning and enjoyment.
