Update on traffic accident in Limonar.

Five people died in a traffic accident that took place this Saturday morning near the community of Caobas, in the municipality of Limonar, according to doctors from the Legal Medicine Department of the Comandante Faustino Pérez Hernández University Hospital in Matanzas.

The deceased are: Rafael Herrera Rojas, 57 years old, with private address in Habana Vieja municipality, Havana province; Zenia Silva Sol, 51 years old and native of Segundo Frente, in Santiago de Cuba; Mariela Mancha Calderín, 49 years old and neighbor of Granma community, in Jovellanos municipality.

Experts and forensic doctors identified the bodies of Olga Río Lara, 75 years old, resident of Minas de Matahambre, Pinar del Río province, and of José Peñate Santana, 64 years old, who lived in Limonar, by means of necrodactyly and judicial identification.

Dr. Gretel Robaina Rodríguez, Deputy Director of Medical Assistance at the Comandante Faustino Pérez Hernández University Clinical-Surgical Hospital, explained that fourteen patients were admitted to the institution. Of these, one died and another remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit. The rest of the injured are in stable condition in ward J and their lives are not in danger.

At the Eliseo Noel Caamaño Pediatric Hospital, the only child involved in the accident is being treated. The ten-year-old boy remains in a stable critical condition, according to Dr. Eylín Muñoz Costales, an intensivist at the hospital.

«This is a patient who arrived in critical condition with compensated hypovolemic shock due to a parietal fracture and extensive laceration and rupture of the scalp. He was stabilized and a CT scan was performed and so far he has no lesions of other life-threatening organs such as the liver, pancreas, lungs. Up to now, the brain lesion is negative according to the CT scan.

The first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in Matanzas, Susely Morfa González, and Governor Mario Sabines Lorenzo, toured the hospitals where the injured are being treated and exchanged with them about their condition and recovery. In the dialogue, the doctors and nurses said that they have the basic resources to attend to the injured.

The accident occurred on a curve with poor visibility, near Limonar. Apparently, according to preliminary reports, the driver of a Gacela van belonging to Cupet lost control and hit another vehicle transporting passengers to Colón.

As a consequence of the impact and the lack of control, the passengers of the Gazelle became dislodged. Two of them fell under a national transportation bus and died at the scene from the blows. Two others died at the local polyclinic of Limonar and a fifth died at the Faustino Pérez Hospital.
