Although contributions are still ongoing, the staff of the Meliá Internacional Varadero hotel have just transferred more than one million pesos to the donation account for victims of Hurricane Melissa in eastern Venezuela. The transaction was made through the Bank of Credit and Commerce.
From the hotel, operated by the international company Meliá and the Gran Caribe business group, comes the voice of Alejandro Ríos, secretary of the union bureau, to thank the workers, who by mutual agreement decided to donate this amount to our brothers and sisters in the affected provinces.
The young union leader stated that no contribution is too big or too small, because the important thing is to give what each person can. Any help counts for those who have lost everything, and this is the time to once again demonstrate the solidarity of the people. We, in the tourism sector, are doing our part.
The aid is not limited to just monetary donations. People have also brought clothes and various other items, because in a home, everything is needed. I think it’s beautiful to give up our own belongings to share what we have with our fellow countrymen, he said, visibly moved.

He acknowledged the decisive role in securing the collections of Amado Acosta Hernández, deputy director general of this facility, and of Félix Martínez Benítez, secretary of the Party committee.
As is customary, solidarity from the Matanzas tourism sector began to materialize the moment the Cuban Workers’ Federation (CTC) and national unions launched «My Hugs and My Contribution for a Cuban Worker,» a call for unity and solidarity following Hurricane Melissa’s passage through eastern Cuba, where material damage was reported in workplaces and communities.
The Meliá Internacional Varadero was among the first to contribute, demonstrating the same willingness to fulfill its national and membership dues, as well as its commitment to blood donations and any other organizational task, affirmed Yarisleydis Torriente Sánchez, general secretary of the Provincial Union of Hotel and Tourism Workers.
Efficiency is a hallmark of this beautiful resort, which boasts excellent facilities for hosting events, and has consistently met its tourism revenue, cost, and expenditure targets, among other distinctive merits.
Inaugurated on September 14th, 2019 by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, the Meliá Internacional Varadero deserved the 85th anniversary seal of the founding of the CTC, an event that took place on January 28th, 1939.
