Betancourt Town Celebrates Bicentennial.
The commemorative activities also extended to the María Villar Buceta House of Culture and the government building, where a plaque was unveiled in honor of the distinguished Director of Culture, Mayra Suárez Guillén, and another commemorating the town’s two centuries of existence, respectively.

The residents of Betancourt experienced a day of profound historical significance as they celebrated the 200th anniversary of the founding of what was once Corral Falso de Macurijes, now Pedro Betancourt. The solemn session of the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power, held in Pepe Roque Park, served as the central venue to exalt the identity and sense of belonging of its inhabitants.
With the participation of political and governmental authorities, delegates, and leaders of mass organizations, the ceremony opened with the local anthem sung by members of the Estrellitas del Futuro children’s choir and an audiovisual presentation summarizing the town’s main milestones.
Furthermore, in recognition of their exemplary contributions to the cultural, economic, and social development of the town, several individuals received the Bicentennial Seal. In particular, citizens Demetrio Elizalde Sotomayor and Luis Jesús López Amigo were awarded the title of Illustrious Sons of Pedro Betancourt.
Similarly, the municipal departments of Education, Health, Culture, and Sports, the Agriculture Delegation, ETECSA (the telecommunications company), and the companies Genetica Avícola (a poultry and livestock company) and Acopio y Beneficio del Tabaco Matanzas (a tobacco collection and processing company), among other organizations and institutions, were recognized for their outstanding performance during this period.
As the event concluded, Yonel Estrada Ramírez, president of the People’s Power Assembly, emphasized the significance of the bicentennial and reaffirmed the commitment to building a better future.
