A necessary debate about the purpose of journalism today characterized the meeting between press professionals and journalism students at the University of Matanzas during the activities commemorating Journalism Day.
The El Valle motel, located in the rural area of Mena, provided the setting for an exchange among colleagues about the current challenges and expectations of the profession, as well as the importance of practicing journalism that transcends mere denunciation.
Guillermo Carmona Rodríguez, from the Girón multiplatform, explained that in his opinion, journalism must be more critical and contextual, while confronting political and cultural realities by addressing controversial issues affecting Cubans and that should concern the relevant authorities and institutions.
For his part, the president of the Union of Journalists of Cuba in the province, Pedro Rizo Martínez, emphasized the value of creating a more efficient media agenda that reflects the interests of the population in order to obtain answers and solutions, supported by audience research.

According to student Rocío Kim, social media management should be guided by ethics and professionalism, a responsibility that all aspiring professionals must assume.
The well-known sports commentator, Pancho Soriano, joined the discussion, highlighting the work of those who, despite adverse difficulties, embrace the commitment in a way that makes veterans proud.

Officially welcoming the graduates to the press was also part of the day’s activities, which unfolded amidst music and good company.
