The Timbalaye 2023 Festival culminates in Matanzas (+audio).
With a varied program that includes the presentation of several rumba groups, among them Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, this Thursday, August 31st, Cuba’s Athens will host the closing ceremony of the Timbalaye La Ruta de la Rumba 2023 Festival.
In its 15th edition, the festival began in Havana on August 20 as part of an itinerary that included several provinces, culminating in our city, recognized as the cradle of the best of rumba.
According to the event’s website, this year’s Timbalaye is dedicated to musical instruments as an integral part of the essence of the cultural identity of the people, specifically to the Batá drums. Under the slogan «Timbalaye lleva Batá», the event seeks to highlight the recognition of this instrument as Cultural Heritage of the Nation.
Among the festival’s activities, the website Cultura Matancera reported a visit to the cultural park of La Marina, the presentation of the Academia La Rumba Soy Yo, a tour of the Castillo San Severino Museum, the presentation of the Grupo Portador Gangá de Longobá, a practical workshop of Afro-Cuban dances by the Afrocuba group at the Casa de Cultura Bonifacio Byrne and the presentation of the Rumberos de Mayabeque and Rumbalay de Cienfuegos groups.
The Timbalaye Festival, which will close this Thursday in Matanzas, seeks to underscore the relevance of the African heritage, present in rumba and in the material and immaterial heritages throughout the country.
