Variety and Originality Distinguish Adrián Gómez Sancho’s Projects.

Sancho’s creations hold emotion within their colors, a virtue not everyone achieves and which, in his short career, has become his calling card.

The exhibition «Modigliani Poetics,» featuring between 20 and 30 small-format portraits, offers a new approach to the image of José Martí, the Apostle of Cuba. It is part of the ongoing projects of Cárdenas-based visual artist Adrián Gómez Sancho.

«It’s a series where I again reflect the image of Martí, this time incorporating some of Modigliani’s style and details. Simply put, I use one detail—the elongated necks that characterize his work—in this exhibition.»

«I’ve incorporated them in a certain way in this exhibition.» See also: https://giron.cu/2024/05/08/sancho-15-anos-con-un-pincel/

Each piece in the exhibition reflects José Martí with a different style and concept, continuing one of the themes that has accompanied his artistic production since 2015, without losing its authenticity, despite the many perspectives that have been dedicated to the National Hero in the visual arts.

The exhibition is scheduled to open next January at the Olga Vallejo Gallery, located at the headquarters of the Cuban Association of Artisan Artists in Cárdenas, as a kind of reunion of the artist with his roots.

“It’s been about eight years since I’ve had an exhibition in that beautiful city. It’s a great place where art is everywhere, where friends come together, and the attention to detail and professionalism will be evident in the exhibition.”

Drawing, painting, and printmaking, including monotype, are the predominant techniques in this exhibition, “but I try to combine and blend them to achieve a mixed media approach in its formal aspects: acrylic, oil, and oil pastel. This exhibition will feature small-format pieces, with around two or three medium-sized works.”

Back in August, Sancho presented the exhibition «My Verse Is Your Verse» at the UNEAC social center in Matanzas, offering an intimate look at how the artist appropriates the image of the National Hero and shares his own.

Originality also distinguishes another of this industrious artist’s projects. It involves his reinterpretation of characters and motifs drawn by children, imbuing them with his own distinctive pictorial style.

“I always like to be involved in several projects. Right now, I have a project based on children’s drawings that’s very much alive. I’m transposing that wonderful spontaneity that comes from their creations into my work; that is, I’m choosing an element, a figure, and incorporating it into my art.

“From there, I create a whole synopsis in the work and a concept where their drawings engage in dialogue with my characters and the iconography already present in my work.” Now I’m in production, selecting some drawings from children’s workshops where I can see the style and spontaneity that only they can achieve.”

But Adrián Gómez Sancho, driven by the insatiable curiosity that often accompanies artists, explores other starting points for his creations.

Addressing, also from multiple perspectives, colors, and pretexts, a myth of Cuban painting—Víctor Manuel’s «La Gitana Tcal»—and other projects more closely linked to Cuban reality, inspire this tireless young man.

From his Gallery Workshop, located in the headquarters of the City Historian’s Office in Matanzas, projects are born, grow, develop, and multiply, demonstrating the versatility of one of the most active young creators in the region. He moves with ease through drawing, painting, and sculpture, but also ventures into printmaking, performance art, installation, and graphic design.

Beyond the mastery of technique, the suggestive themes or the ways in which he approaches them, Sancho’s creations hold emotion within their colors, a virtue that not everyone achieves and that in his few years of career is his calling card.
