In an exciting debut, Yakelín Stornell made history by becoming the first Cuban woman to win in professional boxing, achieving her victory by technical knockout. This milestone represents a significant advance for women’s sports in Cuba.
In the 61.3 kg category, multi-medalist and Olympic champion Lázaro Álvarez won with a resounding technical KO in the eighth round, knocking down his opponent, Miguel Queliz Santos, from the Dominican Republic.
Guantanamo’s Arlen Lopez also shined by defeating Argentina’s Martin Bulacio in the 79.3 kg fight, with a unanimous vote in his favor. «It is essential that we show the world our true potential. We have a vibrant youth and that necessary impetus to face any challenge. We are hungry for boxing!» exclaimed Lopez.
Paris Olympic champion Erislandy Álvarez demonstrated his speed and skill by defining his bout in just 28 seconds against the Dominican Brainer Vázquez, thus becoming the World Boxing Association’s Latin American continental title champion. With his eyes set on the future, Alvarez was ambitious: “We want to defend our title two or three times and also seek the world championship”.
Finally, the captain of Los Domadores de Cuba, Julio César La Cruz, closed with a flourish the Cuban performance in the billboard when he gave a technical KO in the third round, thus reaffirming the high level of Cuban boxing.
