Top Athletes of the Year Honored in Athens, Cuba.

The Sauto Theater, a national monument, will host the gala on December 27 where athletes, coaches, and activists will receive recognition for their effort, dedication, and perseverance over the past twelve months.

The top officials of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation in Matanzas selected the province’s most outstanding athletes of the year.

José Luis Gándara Martínez, the organization’s provincial director, noted that this year was not the busiest in terms of multiple events for the senior categories, so the awards were decided through a voting system involving the specialized press.

The award for best male athlete of the year went to discus thrower Mario Alberto Díaz Torres, who finished fifth at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo and won the Barrientos Memorial this year.

At the Tokyo event, the native of the municipality of Jovellanos threw the discus 64.71 meters, a mark that solidified his place among the world’s elite in the sport.

Tennis player Daniela Fonseca Carrazana was selected as Female Athlete of the Year. She won one gold and two silver medals at the Caribbean Cup held in Barbados, and also earned three gold and one bronze medals in the national top-level competition.

Among the top ten athletes of the year in Matanzas were long jumper Aniel Molina, judokas Andy Granda and Iván Silva, shooter Laina Pérez, and cyclist Liannis Mesa Silveira.
