Tourism Honors Fidel’s Legacy

In morning and afternoon sessions, directors and workers of the Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) in Matanzas are already gathering to honor Fidel Castro on the centenary of his birth, one of the many ways to pay tribute to the promoter of this leisure activity in the country.

Born on August 13, 1926, in the town of Birán, in the eastern province of Holguín, expressions of gratitude to the Historical Leader of the Cuban Revolution are growing in these lands, as his birthday approaches.

The morning sessions began at Cubacar Varadero, where men and women expressed the everlasting legacy of the eternal Commander-in-Chief, recognizing how much he did for the sector’s progress in the country, from the very triumph of the Revolution in January 1959.

At facilities such as Palmeras, inaugurated by Fidel on May 10, 1990, they are also preparing an emotional tribute — a special embrace for the one who on that occasion asked the collective to remain an enduring example in service provision.

Meanwhile, other hotels in operation and extra-hotel sites are also finalizing details for the occasion, «proud of how much our beloved Fidel deserves, whom we will never let die, much less in the year of his centenary,» assured Yahíma Ortega, general secretary of the Brisas Varadero union bureau.

With great expectation, Matanzas — a province visited on multiple occasions by Fidel — awaits the gala in his honor that will take place on the 13th at the Sauto Theater, the highlight of an artistic-recreational program that has been taking place for days at various points in the province.

With the revolutionary triumph, Fidel assumed the presidency of the body dedicated to tourism, and across the country, he promoted accommodation and recreation centers, restaurants, and cafeterias for the enjoyment of locals and foreigners.

The celebrations for the centenary of the Historical Leader’s birth arrive at an extremely complicated moment for tourism, a strategic sector of the economy, and a preferred target of the economic, commercial, and financial war of the United States government against Cuba.

Faced with that challenge, the best way to honor Fidel is to overcome those challenges, stated Yarisleydis Torriente Sánchez, general secretary of the Provincial Hotel and Tourism Workers Union.
