Cuba’s Deputy Prime Minister, Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, insisted on the need to evaluate the fulfillment of the Government’s objectives with a practical, integrating and urgent approach, during a meeting with producers and authorities of Perico municipality.
Cuba’s Deputy Prime Minister, Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, insisted on the need to evaluate the fulfillment of the Government’s objectives with a practical, integrating and urgent approach, during a meeting with producers and authorities of Perico municipality.
«It has producer potential and it also has scientific potential. Now those two things we have to integrate and assemble them into a development plan as urgently as possible,» Tapia Fonseca stressed.
He also stressed that the plans must respond to the essential needs of the population with clear goals in food such as food, milk, beans and grains.
He announced the priority of programs such as oil production (soybean, sunflower, moli) to reduce external dependencies:
«We can substitute imports. In fact, there is land here for that and there are colleagues who have already demonstrated it».
He called for multiplying good agricultural practices, citing the example of local producers such as Andrés Fernández, and demanded greater participation of all organizations.
He also criticized bureaucratic reports and demanded concrete measurements:
«What we need food, in how many productive bases I have it, in how many producers we are going to develop it (…). These are the elements we need to conduct the processes».
He also remarked that the diagnoses must be translated into quick actions. «Putting this into practice has to be one of the main tasks, in how each [actor] can contribute more to growth».
As part of the visit, he visited social institutions such as the maternity home and the home for the elderly. He also held a meeting with specialists from the Indio Hatuey Pasture and Forage Experimental Station to promote agricultural extension.
