Matanzas Welcomes Central American Gold Medalist Andy Granda

Authorities from the Government and the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (INDER) in Matanzas received the gold medalist from the current Santo Domingo Central American and Caribbean Games, Andy Granda.

The reception was led by Vice-Intendant Yamahir López Siska, in charge of sports attention in the territory; Yoel Torres, president of the Municipal Athlete Care Commission, as well as neighbors and family members of the Matanzas judoka.

Andy Granda was crowned champion of the over-100-kilogram division in the Central Caribbean competition by defeating Dominican José Nova via ippon in the grand final of the regional tournament.

The native of the municipality of Jovellanos also achieved a bronze medal in the team event, where the largest Caribbean island fell to the Dominican representative in the title discussion.

Granda commented that he was very calm during the competition due to the confidence he had in the training prior to the championship, in which he had the opportunity to participate in different foreign competitions.

The two medals achieved by the stocky judoka highlight the level and commitment of Matanzas athletes representing the largest Caribbean archipelago in the multi-sport event.
