The province’s Botanical Garden has more than 38 plants representative of the vegetation of the northern coast of Havana-Matanzas recently planted by members of the project Actions for the conservation of the coastal and subcoastal xeromorphic scrubland of Punta Guanos.

Endangered species such as Coccothrinax borhidiana, Pseudosamanea cubana, Harrisia eriophora, Hamelia patens and Solanum havanense are the new acquisitions of this garden near the University of Matanzas.

In addition, the project donated 50 palm seedlings, four of Jaquinia aculata, 500 seeds of Leptocereus nudiflorus and 500 of Harrisia eriophora, which are added to the more than 800 species found there.

The Matanzas Botanical Garden has ten hectares and is one of the botanical gardens that are part of the network of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment aimed at providing information on Cuba’s regional ecosystems.

It houses endemic and native plant species of the island, establishing conservation strategies for endangered species of the flora of Matanzas, such as the Melocactus matanzanus.

In addition, it favors the propagation of seeds. Among its varieties there are exotic components defined as plants not native to the country or the region.
