Provincial History Prize 2023 awarded in Matanzas.

Olga Lidia Gonzalez Munguia, physics teacher turned researcher of the history of sports in Matanzas and its relevant figures, director of the Palacio de Junco Museum for more than a decade, was awarded the Antonio Jose Valdes Provincial History Prize, granted by the provincial branch of the Union of Historians of Cuba (UNHIC).

Every two years the UNHIC awards the recognition to members with relevant results in the work of preserving the memory of the  people in Matanzas.

«I am infinitely grateful for this award. I did not expect it, but it is a commitment to continue moving forward,» said González Munguía.

On the occasion were recognized scholars of Humanistic Science with national diplomas, the Forensic Anthropology team that worked in the identification of the remains of Cienfuegos fighter Máximo Ramón Jauregui Díaz, fallen in the sands of Playa Girón; the Camilo Cienfuegos University and the library of Jagüey Grande.

They also paid tribute to the Honorary President of the Historians’ Organization, Eusebio Leal Spengler, architect of the first national event for the Historian’s Day, held in Matanzas 25 years ago.

In closing, the member of the Provincial Party Bureau, Yosvani Gil Ramírez, congratulated the honorees, pondered the importance of the cultivation of history and recognized the UNHIC Matanzas on the 42nd anniversary of its foundation.
