With just days to go before the start of the biggest baseball spectacle for national teams, some good news has delighted fans of the sport in Matanzas.
The speedy pitcher Armando Dueñas has earned a spot on the team that will represent us in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
After a successful stint in the Venezuelan and Nicaraguan leagues, the Matanzas native has greatly improved his command of the strike zone and his pitch combinations, aspects that have helped him become a better pitcher.
In the National Series playoffs with the Matanzas Crocodiles, he became an indispensable player for manager Armando Ferrer.
In twelve innings pitched, he didn’t allow a single earned run, resulting in a 0.00 ERA. He struck out 17 batters and issued only two walks. In addition to his excellent numbers, he boasts one win and two saves in this stage, along with a WHIP of 0.83.
With the national team in their preparation game against Nicaragua, he served as both closer and setter, performing well in both roles.
After a year in which he won the Cuban domestic league championship with the Cocodrilos, playing a key role, Armando Dueñas will look to solidify his career in an event featuring many of the world’s top players.
