Play About Emilia, Embroiderer of the National Flag, Premieres in Cárdenas
The «La Dominica» hotel, a National Monument, where the flag with the red triangle and the solitary star first flew, became the setting for the premiere in Cárdenas of the play «Emilia habla con los que no la escuchan» (Emilia Speaks to Those Who Don’t Listen to Her), by playwright Ulises Rodríguez Febles, performed by National Theater Prize winner Miriam Muñoz Benítez, as part of the «Virgilio Piñera» Theater Day.
Emilia Teurbe de Tolón was the Matanzas woman who embroidered the tricolor flag that arrived in Cárdenas on May 19, 1850.
About that special event, Muñoz, director of Teatro Icarón, confessed to the press that she felt «a singular emotion acting in the space where that important historical event took place.
«This has been a different performance for me, and I will keep it in a reserved corner of my memory,» she said.
«Thanks to everyone who helped with such passion: to Febles, the author, Illustrious Son of this beautiful city; to the composer María de los Ángeles Horta; and to the unforgettable artist Rolando Estévez Jordán, National Design Prize.
«Also to those who died so that at La Dominica our flag could fly in the wind — a flag that would be adopted at the Guáimaro Assembly on April 10, 1869, as Cuba’s national emblem.»
During the theater day, in commemoration of the birth of Cárdenas playwright and poet Virgilio Piñera, on the 114th anniversary of his birth, a lecture about the famous theater scholar was given by essayist and narrator of the same birthplace, Alberto Abreu Arcia, Casa de las Américas Prize.
In the afternoon, participants placed a floral offering at Virgilio Piñera’s tomb in the cemetery of the so-called «Flag City.»
