Journalists in Matanzas recognized and decorated on UPEC’s 60th anniversary

 

As the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC) celebrates its six decades of life on July 15th, outstanding professionals of the press in Matanzas received this Wednesday the UPEC 60th Anniversary Commemorative Coin, during a ceremony held at the Office of the Conservator of the capital city.

 

The ceremony began with words of remembrance to the renowned radio broadcaster and former president of the association, Antonio Moltó Martorell, where José González Rivas, Manuel Hernández Valdés and Roberto Pérez Betancourt, who received the José Martí National Journalism Award, were honored for their dedication and outstanding careers in the field of information.

 

Other speech and writing experts who received the emblematic distinction were Francisco Soriano Bermúdez, Maritza Tejera García, Aurora López Herrera, Federico Almeida Baró, Wilfredo Alayón Pérez, Efraín Rodríguez Salas and Yirmara Torres Hernández.

 

The evening of UPEC’s 60th anniversary was also an opportunity to pay tribute to the professionals from Matanzas who won prizes and mentions in the recent edition of the 26th of July National Contest.

Among those honored for their results in the written press category were journalists Roberto Jesús Hernández, Anet Martínez Suárez, Yenli Lemus Domínguez and the novel and sagacious director of the Girón newspaper, Ayose García Naranjo, who won multiple prizes in the contest.

Arletis Arango Oña and Jessica Mesa Duarte were also praised for obtaining mentions in the radio category.

Pedro Rizo Martinez, current president of UPEC in this western province, was in charge of the words of praise to the distinguished and decorated.

«There are other journalists who well deserve this coin and will receive it as part of the actions for the 60th anniversary of our organization, some with more or almost 50 years in the exercise of the profession … You are the mainstays and references for the new generations. You are the culture of resistance, of daily battle, of insisting and not getting tired in spite of the complexities we face» -said the young executive when delivering the main speech of the event.

Yovanny Gil Ramírez, head of the Ideological Department of the Provincial Committee of the Party, among other guests, such as the musician Reynaldo Montalvo Peña, who entertained the cultural part together with several students of the Vocational School of Arts.
