What is undoubtedly a historic first, the first hectare planted with potatoes under ecological cultivation in the Ciénaga de Zapata territory, can also be interpreted as an intelligent use of science and technology and also the conciliation of wills.
Jorge Luis Angel Duarte, president of the only Credit and Service Cooperative in Cuba’s largest wetland, reiterates that this is the first time that potatoes are planted in the region and they hope to continue betting on its extension.
The hectare of the tuber grows in a good vegetative state, explains Dr. Giraldo Martín Martín, specialist of the Indio Hatuey Pasture and Forage Station in this province, after his recent visit to the town of Pálpite.
They have made very good use of that first hectare and already think the cooperative members of the Antonio Mauri add three more for next season, under agroecological standards.
It is a great advantage to bet on this crop, reflects Martin Martin, also national coordinator of organic potato cultivation, because this year the nation sows about 180 hectares and thus, with low yields of just ten tons per hectare, each cenaguero will have a kilogram of food.
The agronomic and phytosanitary care is guaranteed with its own resources and produced by the agricultural system and the Biological Pharmaceutical Laboratories, which offer a wide range of biological products.
In short, Pálpite’s first hectare of potatoes is nothing more than the consecration of will, intelligence and the desire to do things differently.
