General Customs: six decades of safeguarding the Cuban people (+audio).

One of the most emblematic organizations of our country, recognized for its meritorious actions in detecting and confronting drug trafficking, terrorism and smuggling, as well as the protection of the population, the national industry and the environment, celebrates its 62nd anniversary this February 5th.

Conceived in 1963 as the then Cuban Socialist Customs, the General Customs of the Republic of Cuba has established itself as a fundamental pillar in the management of borders, foreign trade and the defense of national sovereignty and, in this scenario, its close collaboration with other institutions, organizations and the people in general, justify the solid position and prestige that characterize its work.

In line with the challenge of modernizing its processes and adapting to new technologies to guarantee an efficient and transparent management of its services, it has implemented computer systems that not only facilitate customs clearance and reduce waiting times, but also optimize the flow of trade and facilitate the fight against possible illegal activities that could threaten the tranquility of citizens and economic growth.

Likewise, its social role transcends these functions, since in critical moments for the Island, such as those affected by natural disasters, the work of Customs in coordinating the entry of humanitarian aid stands out. And its work in the regulation of international trade makes it possible to safeguard Public Health, since it ensures that products entering the national territory fully comply with the established sanitary standards.

Not exempt from challenges and political and economic circumstances that, beyond the blockade and financial crises, could dampen the timely completion of its tasks, Customs has stood out for its resilience and commitment to the development of the country, hence in a context in which Cuba pursues the diversification of its sources of income and the strengthening of its trade relations, the role played by this structure becomes increasingly relevant.

It is even more relevant to recognize the daily efforts of customs workers who, despite adversities, remain loyal to the island and its development. Thus, this anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the achievements and challenges that still persist; however, it allows reaffirming the mission of this organization to be the guarantor of order and legality in the Cuban borders with the efficiency and transparency that, during these six decades and counting, has characterized its great work.
