Following a directive from the country’s top public health authorities, the Cuban province of Matanzas is concentrating its efforts on updating anti-COVID-19 vaccination schedules for pregnant women and mothers of children under the age of two.

According to Lissy Vega Rodríguez, in charge of the vaccination programmes in the western province, the aim is to complete the vaccination schedule or administer a booster dose, depending on the case, so that they are better protected at the end of pregnancy and at the time of delivery.

At the same time, vaccination schedules are initiated in infants who reach the age of two, either with the drug Abdala or with Soberana 02 and Plus at the required intervals, in addition to advancing in the reinforcement of children between the ages of two and 18, said the specialist.

Vega Rodriguez also pointed out that the administration of booster doses continues in the adult population, over 19 years of age, who are more than six months since the last inoculation, while those who belong to risk groups or work in sectors such as tourism, public health and education, among others, receive the third booster.

The directive emphasised that the province has vaccines available to cover the different universes and that the vaccination centres in health areas or in the family doctor’s and nurse’s offices are still active.

Matanzas, which in 2021 experienced a tense situation due to the spread of COVID-19, has 99 percent of the general population with a complete vaccination schedule, while it is engaged in protection with added doses to avoid backsliding in the battle against the so-called invisible enemy.

Official data issued by Public Health and government authorities in the territory refer that in the pandemic peak, which occurred between the months of June and August 2021, the province exceeded 10 thousand active and added more than three thousand new diagnoses in a single day.
