Scientific contribution fosters production chain from natural products

Specialists from the Biomedical Research Laboratory of the University of Medical Sciences of Matanzas are working on the development of scientific research on natural products and their applications in medicine.

One of the main novelties in the area of project development in which this scientific institution is immersed is a productive chain called «Biomedical presentations from medicinal plants», in which the Suchel-Jovel company, in the municipality of Jovellanos, and the Provincial Company of Pharmacies and Opticians are also collaborating.

Mercedes Delgado, coordinator of the Biomedical Laboratory, pointed out that Suchel-Jovel company is in charge of the productive process and the pharmaceutical company is in charge of the output of the plant extracts, taking into account that it is carried out in the laboratory, but on a lower scale.

Delgado added that there are plans to obtain the formulation for making an antibacterial soap, a bath gel and an antiseptic cream. «These formulations are already undergoing a micro-logical and bacteriological research process to certify the quality of the product.

«The productive chain is of social interest because the research carried out seeks to analyze the antimicrobial properties of plants of natural origin to support the manufacture of products for the Ministry of Public Health,» said the coordinator.

At a time when the country is going through a strong economic crisis, innovative researches such as those developed in the Biomedical Research Laboratory constitute a ray of hope that makes valid the words of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro when he said that the Revolution needed men and women of science.
