The funeral procession of Fidel’s ashes is remembered in Jovellanos.

As seven years ago, the people once again gathered along 17th Street or Carretera Central to commemorate the passing of the funeral procession that accompanied the ashes of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz on his march to immortality.

A pilgrimage led mostly by young people and students was the tribute paid to the undisputed leader of the Cuban Revolution, the ever-present Fidel.

On November 30th, 2016, immersed in grief, the children of this people went out to meet their leader, precisely from this central street they said goodbye to the man who years ago had been interested and shared with them after the devastating passage of Hurricane Michelle through western Cuba.

But that would not be the only time that Fidel would touch the soil of this central territory, because since 1959 his bond became so close that here he would consolidate the development of important programs aimed at defense, agriculture, science and technology.

In a simple and emotional act, the presence of the man who is a paradigm for the world was evoked in the voices of artists and speakers on November 30th, while Teresa Polledo Sotolongo, first Secretary of the Municipal Committee of the UJC highlighted the commitment of the new generation in the defense of the achievements of the Revolution and also exhorted them to «…. to resist and move forward with demand, responsibility and discipline…» as stated at the time by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.

Jovellanenses were accompanied in this pilgrimage by the main authorities of the municipality headed by Darina Luzbet Sánchez, member of the bureau of the Municipal Committee of the Party, Danays Rives Álvarez, president of the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power and Alicia de la Caridad Misiara, deputy mayor.
