Undoubtedly, with the epic of Playa Giron, the largest of the Antilles further raised its international prestige and exalted its combative spirit against the jaws of imperialism.

The frustration in which the United States government was plunged after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution on January 1st, 1959, motivated a growing wave of bloody stratagems to annihilate the rebel mandate in the country.

Precisely, on April 15th, 1961, the prevailing tranquility at dawn was interrupted when B-26 bombers from Nicaragua turned the air bases of Ciudad Libertad, San Antonio de los Baños and Santiago de Cuba into authentic battle scenarios.

About this day, whose events became a prelude to the epic of Giron, we talked with Jose Ramon Cartaya Marrero, president of the Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution in Pedro Betancourt municipality.

In spite of the lack of experience, the Cuban artillery bravely faced the attacks, managing to diminish the mercenary power and consolidating the spirit of resistance and the courage of the revolutionary guerrilla front.

Likewise, Demetrio Elizalde Sotomayor, retired from the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television in the town, signified the socio-political legacy of Giron for Cuba and the world.

The memory of this battle and those who participated in it continues to illuminate the path of the Revolution and highlight the historical will of the Cuban people to prevail their right to independence, self-determination and sovereignty.
